On Tuesday, the Trump campaign strongly rejected the media’s portrayal of Vice President Harris as endorsing a more favorable stance on border wall construction, labeling the suggestion as “absurd.”
Karoline Leavitt, the national press secretary for the Trump campaign, criticized Harris’s silence, saying, “How much longer will the mainstream media let Kamala Harris avoid direct questions and rely on staff for statements? It’s DAY 37 with no interviews from her, and now anonymous sources from her campaign are falsely asserting she supports President Trump’s border wall. This claim is utterly ridiculous and untrue.”
Axios featured a headline on Tuesday morning accusing Harris of a “flip-flop” regarding border wall construction. The article highlighted Harris’s support for a bipartisan border security bill introduced in January, which includes funding for border security and restrictions on asylum entries.

The proposed legislation, supported by the Biden administration but struggling to gain sufficient Republican backing for passage, includes a modest allocation for additional border wall construction—though this is only a small fraction of the $25 billion former President Trump envisioned for the project.
Despite consistent backing from Harris, President Biden, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Axios reported that Harris’s recent pledge at the Democratic National Convention to sign the bill signifies a shift towards a more assertive immigration stance.
In her speech, Harris stated, “Last year, Joe and I collaborated with both Democrats and conservative Republicans to craft the most robust border security bill in decades, which received endorsement from the Border Patrol. However, Donald Trump, fearing it would undermine his campaign, instructed his allies in Congress to block the bill. I refuse to compromise our security for political gain. As president, I pledge to revive and sign the bipartisan border security bill that was obstructed. We can uphold our proud legacy as a nation of immigrants, reform our flawed immigration system, and establish a pathway to citizenship while securing our borders.”

The Trump campaign highlighted that, despite the modest support for additional border wall funding, Harris has consistently opposed the wall’s expansion. The Trump administration succeeded in constructing over 400 miles of border wall before the Biden-Harris administration halted the project abruptly in 2021.
Though there have been some minor additions and repairs funded by previously allocated congressional resources, the Biden administration has consistently maintained its opposition to further border wall construction, with no plans for substantial new projects.
Harris has long criticized the border wall, branding it as “un-American” in 2018, and a year earlier, she supported a Democratic bill aimed at halting its construction. When she launched her presidential campaign in 2019, she dismissed the wall’s effectiveness as a security measure.
